Our annual Dimebag Guitar raffle ended this past Saturday in an interesting and unprecedented fashion. The guitar winner was initially Jim McMahon, who had entered the the raffle only to give to charity, not expecting to win. Upon winning the guitar, he generously donated it back to the bar to be raffled yet again, to raise more funds. The eventual, and final winner picked was Big Rob, from Queens, the fourth guitar player to win the annual event. Perfect. This year we raised $ 780 for The VH1 Save the Music Foundation, which put us over the $6000 mark in funds raised sinced we started this event. A check will be sent to the foundation in honor of Darrell "Dimebag" Abbott. Many, many thanks to John C., John P. and the folks at Dean Guitars, and, of course, everyone who bought a ticket and helped us support a great charity.

Ours thanks to everyone who came out this past weekend to help christen the new DUFF'S location. The weekend was a total grandslammer and the response to the new spot was overwhelmingly positive. We've just added a new photo gallery with some shots of the space "168 Marcy", check em' out!

In related news, we have also reopened the old location at North 3rd Street this week "The Bunker", after some not so extensive renovations and repairs.It's rough & ready for business, and if we have anything to with it ,and we do, it will ROCK!

It's that time of year again as we remember Dimebag with our annual tribute party and guitar raffle. Dean guitars has once again generously donated a Dean Dimebag guitar to be raffled off, with all proceeds going to The VH1 Save The Music Foundation. We'll be doing a free blacktooth shots at midnight, and crankin' the tunes & Dimevision all night as we celebrate the life & times of "The Idol". We've managed to raise over $5000 since we started this event, and with your help, we hope to knock that grand total up as high as we can this year.

The hangover of hangovers ...

On behalf of everyone at DUFF'S, we'd like to thank everyone who came out & tore it up with us one last time at our North 3rd Street location. I can say that in my 10 years of doing this, Saturday's party was one of the most over the the top, out of control events I've ever been a part of. It was fuckin' hilarious. Like everything else that has gone on at that bar over the years, ya had to be there to understand.

Now, onto our opening weekend at 168 Marcy Avenue this coming Friday & Saturday nights. We'll be capping the weekend off on Sunday with the official after show party for our friends NACHTMYSTIUM, following their DUFF'S sponsored show at Public Assembly (View the flyer below for the complete show lineup). We were recently informed by Citysearch.com that DUFF'S, for the fourth year in a row, has been voted the Best Dive Bar in New York City. We've won our share of "best of" awards over the years (this one is our 20th), and it's always great to be recognized, especially with this award coming in the final week of the North 3rd Street location. Our thanks to everyone who voted for us, we're all looking forward to more great times in '09 as we crank things up a few notches at the bar's new location.

BRUTALITY RETURNS TO NORTH SIX STREET!!

MTV2 came down to the bar last week and invaded the new DUFF'S location (opening date to announced on this web site) along with Host Jose Mangin, former HBB VJ's Dee Snider, Riki Rachtman, and Jamey Jasta to film a special 20th Anniversary Edition of the show. The raucous shoot went off without a hitch, and the results will be aired Saturday October 25th (10 PM), capping off a week of special anniversary programming. New York, NY (October 7, 2008) – Metal lives on! MTV2’s Headbangers Ball, the longest running show on the network celebrates its 20th anniversary with a bang. Beginning on October 25th, Headbangers Ball takes you on a hard rock journey with noteworthy interviews, archive footage from the past 20 years, a roundtable discussion from Headbanger VJ’s themselves, and many more.

Headbangers Ball, the hardest show in the world, which airs on approximately 400 channels worldwide, replaced Heavy Metal Mania, helmed by Dee Snider of Twisted Sister fame. The Ball's first long term host was Adam Curry who was then replaced by the one and only Riki Rachtman in 1990. Moving from MTV to its current home on MTV2, Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed-fame took over the reigns and interviewed some of the sickest metal bands around. Jamey may be gone now, but keep on the look out constantly for special guests and the freshest videos on the web and TV. NEW YORK, October 15, 2008 - Halloween weekend marks the 20-year anniversary of dark master artist, Paul Booth’s tattooing career and we just can’t let it go by without a party! Put on your costume and join us for an evening of true Halloween spirit as only Paul can do it. There will be live entertainment, collaborative painting and tattooing, costume contests, music, freakshows, and of course Fetish Dancers! This event will be filmed for one of Paul's award winning DVD's.

FRIDAY, October 31st – Join Paul at Duff's in Brooklyn for Halloween. Paul will be presenting the 1st Annual MISS ZILF Beauty Pageant. A ZILF is sort of like a MILF but much colder and much hotter at the same time! So Attention all Hot Zombie Chicks! Come on down to wear the Crown. Cool prizes include everything from lots of free drinks to Tattoo time! Finalists must be able to attend Paul's Anniversary Party the next night for the final judging.

The first solo exhibition of paintings by Vincent Castiglia will open at the H.R. Giger Museum Gallery in Gruyeres, Switzerland on October 31st 2008 and run through mid 2009.

Vincent Castiglia is the first American artist to receive a solo exhibition invitation from the H.R. Giger Museum Gallery in its 10-year history. The 26 year old, internationally renowned New York-based artist initially drew the attention of the legendary Swiss-surrealist H.R. Giger and his wife/co-director of the museum Carmen Scheifele Giger, after meeting the couple in 2005. Castiglia's participation in the H.R. Giger Museum's group exhibition of the Society for Art of Imagination followed in 2006 and soon resulted in plans for the artist's own solo show at the museum.

Working in the tradition of surrealism and visionary art, Castiglia states: "my paintings tend to depict iconographic forms, vital and necrotic juxtapositions, and reinterpretations of transpersonal experience."

The award-winning artist, who literally puts his life into his work, has mastered the use of his own blood as a medium. Just as this personal, iron rich pigment holds the key to countless facts and information regarding the sustenance and perpetuation of life, Castiglia's subjects are often "exposed like a body that has been dissected to determine the cause and manner of one's demise," states Detroit's Forensic Photographer, Joe Sopkowics. As he strips away layers of flesh, muscle and bone, Castiglia confronts humanity's innate fear of the unknown while exquisitely illustrating its losing battle with biological truths.

Vincent Castiglia has showcased his works on paper at museums and galleries throughout the US, Switzerland and England, including exhibits for: The Society for Art of Imagination at The H.R. The H.R. Giger Museum opened in June of 1998, in Gruyeres, Switzerland. It showcases the largest collection of Giger's work on permanent public display, encompassing his paintings, sculptures, furniture and film designs, including his work on "Alien", "Poltergeist", and "Species". The top floor of the Museum houses Giger's private collection, which includes over 600 works of art by Salvador Dali, Ernst Fuchs, Dado, Bruno Weber, Günther Brus, Claude Sandoz, François Burland, Friedrich Kuhn, Joe Coleman, Sibylle Ruppert, Andre Lassen, among many others.

The H.R. Giger Museum Gallery is located in the adjoining wing of the museum complex, above the H.R. Giger Museum Bar. There, since 1999, and now on a twice a year rotating basis, Giger utilizes the three room exhibition space to show the work of artists, mostly those already in his private collection, in an effort to help broaden the art appreciation of visitors to his museum. Previous exhibitions have been for Wessi, Prof. Ernst Fuchs, Hans Bellmer, Fred Knecht, Stelio Diamantopoulos, Martin Schwarz, Claude Sandoz, Günther Brus, François Burland, Rudolf Stüssi, and the Society for Art of Imagination. Currently on exhibit are the paintings of Victor Safonkin.

An exhibition catalogue will be printed for "Remedy For the Living" Iron-Oxide Visions on Paper. The artist will be present at the opening.

DUFF'S along with Nonelouder.com and Epic Records hosted an invite only listening party at the bar this past Wednesday for MUDVAYNE. The band came down to hang out as their new disc, The New Game, was played for the first time publicly. It's hard to get a handle on record with only one spin, but the new music was very well received and sounded killer pumping good & loud. With two zombie mannequins perched on its rooftop and owner Jimmy Duff's beat-up hearse parked out front, Duff's is as distinctive as it is strange. Inside, disembodied dolls' heads and dead animals preside over a room full of heavily bearded, heavily tattooed metal heads. The jukebox is fully stocked with heavy heavy metal by bands like Possessed and Viking metal legends Amon Amarth. Duff moved his famous Hell's Kitchen Bellevue Bar into this former check cashing joint in 2003 after that Manhattan neighbourhood became too tame for his liking. At his Williamsburg locale, he opened up a year-round patio and a public grill. On warm summer nights, nothing beats a free hotdog, a can of beer and the relaxing sounds of thrash metal.

Join us for yet another " Only at DUFF'S" event this Saturday for the first wedding ceremony to be performed at the bar. Nick and Sonia, aka, Mr. & Mrs. Whiteboy, will be exchanging vows under the supervision of Reverend Jimmy Duff, Ordained Minister. The party starts at 9 PM, with the ceremony at 11:30 PM. The Crawl will proceed all over Williamsburg, with stops for live music, suspensions, sideshow performances, and the infamous "Strip for Pain" with the ladies of Burning Angel. Once again, the annual New York City Tattoo Convention coincides another weekend of over the top entertainment at the Mecca. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday is the 11th Annual New York City Tattoo Convention, being held at The Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan. The NYCTC is one of the most well respected conventions on the planet, and always attracts world class artists, vendors, and collectors. I'll be working the door on Friday, so if you happen to make it on Friday, swing on by and say hello. As the Spring Equinox is upon us this Saturday, it seemed only fitting we'd kick off the season of warm weather, colorful flowers and longer sunny days with a full blown festival of the coldest, darkest, most brutal, grim, black/death metal bands in the underground.

Kicking off this Saturday, March 8th's Pure Fucking Darkness Festival at Brooklyn's club Europa are PA's black thrashers Infernal Stronghold and their CT comrades in Cain, Baphomet's Horns with their Satan summoning, speeding, savage True Black Metal. NY's own malignant manifestation, Malkuth spew forth a black metal maelstrom of despair and destruction followed by NJ's blood feasting death metalers Annunaki making their return to Brooklyn. OH's oldschool demons Decrepit make their long awaited NY debut as do MA's blasphemous black monks Witch Tomb and OH's prophets of rats and plague Manticore.

Acheron co-headline Pure Fucking Darkness with a special Rites of The Black Mass set celebrating Acheron's 20th Anniversary. Closing the night are the undisputed black/death metal masters Incantation. Reuniting the classic early 90's trinity of Craig Pillard (on vocals) John McEntee (on guitar), and Jim Roe (on drums), the lineup that recorded Incantation's classic first three albums (Onward To Golgotha, Mortal Throne Of Nazarene, and The Forsaken Mourning Of Angelic Anguish), playing together for the first time in over 14 years!

Tuesday's record release party was postponed out of safety concerns, with the roads being an icy mess from the season's first real snow. Type O Negative were kind enough to donate to the bar the massive cross that Peter was "crucified" on in the original Christian Woman video. Peter, Johnny, and Kenny brought it over in Johnny's truck, and we somehow managed to get it up on the porch. It wasn't an easy task, considering the motherfucker weighs a ton, or, in this case, a T.O.N.

Per Peter's request, we do have plans to do something special with it. It's going to take some engineering and hard work, but we'll get to it - We'll let you know when we do.

In the new issue of INKED (on stands now), the editors pick their top bars in the country from 13 cities. DUFF'S was one of three New York City bars to make the cut. The article prominently features a couple of cool photos from the bar, including the one below of Tracy blowing fire. View the entire write up on the bar and all of the photos HERE.

The DUFF'S anniversary party with Paul Booth last Saturday was a riot, and a great way to start another year at the bar's not so new location. The winners of the tattoo raffle were as follows: Tina Z - 3rd place, some cat I can't remember - 2nd place (If you know his name please contact me here so I can update this info), and the grand prize winner of a custom Paul Booth tattoo this February, was Big Jeff from Rockland County. The word on the street is he'll be getting a map of Rockland County tatted on his back, actual size.

Among the other insanity that is a regular occurrence at the bar, I became an Ordained Minister Saturday night as well. This means I will be able to perform weddings (and funerals, complete with your choice of hearse) at the bar, all free of charge.

Our friends at METAL MANIACS asked me for some picks in their special year end roundup issue. I gladly complied. I choose to call em' my favorites of 2007, as opposed to calling anything the "best of", it's all relative. And yes, I'm aware Amon Amarth's disc was released in '06, it's still one of my favorites / in heavy rotation for '07.
