Sad news today - David Gold from Woods Of Ypres passed away yesterday in a car accident. He was a very talented, super cool, down to earth dude. Big loss. A major Type O fan too, a band that clearly influenced WOP. Any TON fans would do themselves a favor and go check out some Woods music. Our condolences go out to his band mates, family, and the metal community at large at this time.

GOD BLESS OZZY OZZBOURNE official DVD/Blu-ray release party

Join us this Saturday for the official DVD/Blu-ray release party for Ozzy documentary "God Bless Ozzy Ozzbourne". The party starts at 9 PM and we will have a couple dozen copies of it, along with other Ozzy goodies, to give away. As always, no cover charge, 21 and over with ID.

From EAGLE ROCK ENTERTAINMENT:
Ozzy Osbourne is one of the most iconic figures in rock and one of the founding fathers of heavy metal, however to many his “Madman” persona has overshadowed his considerable musical achievements. “God Bless Ozzy Osbourne” tells for the first time the story of his career from the founding of Black Sabbath through to solo stardom and his wider fame beyond. These were the wild days of his prodigious drug and alcohol intake, of biting the head from a dove at a record company meeting and biting into a bat on stage but also of the tragic death of Randy Rhoads and the reality TV show The Osbournes. The film follows Ozzy’s torturous and emotionally fraught journey from excess to sobriety, which Ozzy regards as his greatest accomplishment. Featuring never before seen footage, new interviews with Ozzy himself, his family, his bandmates, and those who both inspired him and were inspired by him, this is the first film to take viewers inside the mind and psyche of this legendary figure.

Hailz to the readers of The Village Voice, who voted DUFF'S the best Metal Bar in New York City, 2011. Much thanks to all the fellow "lifers" who have made a home with us, wherever our location may have been over the years.

MACHINE HEAD INVADES NYC

Machine Head was in town last night for a listening party for their latest kick ass offering "Unto The Locust". After getting caught in a clusterfuck of traffic, the band made it's way over to the bar afterwards for a jam session with our friends DIMEBAG NYC. After probably too many shots, said jam session didn't work out too well, lol, but hey, that's rock n' roll. Still, a great a night for the fans who got to throw back some drinks and hang with one of their favorite bands.

Eagle Rock Entertainment has set a July 26 release date for "Double Live - Northstage Theatre 1982 / New York Steel Benefit show 2001", a two-disc DVD set which couples TWISTED SISTER live shows from the start of the band's recording career in 1982 and the beginning of its reunion career in 2001. The show from the North Stage Theater in Long Island in 1982 was the same year as the release of TWISTED SISTER's debut album, "Under The Blade". It features many of the songs from that record along with some brilliant cover versions and is a stunning snapshot of the band in its early days.

Following the terrible events of September 11, 2001, TWISTED SISTER's classic lineup reunited to headline the New York Steel benefit show at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City on November 28 that year. The concert was a fundraiser for the families of New York police officers and firefighters who had lost their lives in the attack on the World Trade Center. The reaction to TWISTED SISTER's set was overwhelming and led directly to the ongoing existence of the band today.

"Double Live - Northstage Theatre 1982 / New York Steel Benefit show 2001" track listing:

"History Lesson Part 1: Punk Rock in Los Angeles in 1984"

FREE Screening at Duff's in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on July 9th

Classic raw punk footage and interviews with The Meat Puppets, The Minutemen, Twisted Roots and Redd Kross

On Saturday July 9th, Dave Travis brings A History Lesson Part 1 East for its New York debut at Duff's in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The movie will screen at 9 PM.

The director will be on hand to answer any questions about the film and the time and place. The screening is free, however, it is 21 and over with ID.

Duff's is located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn at 168 Marcy Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11211-8400

It has been said that Los Angeles and San Francisco were the last major metropolitan cities in which punk music scenes developed and once it hit California, punk changed shapes numerous times, spread to every corner of the United States and became a permanent fixture in popular culture.

In 1984, a teenage Dave Travis decided to capture punk rock in Los Angeles on video tape, a fascination and hobby that he would continue until 1997, logging in hundreds of hours of Los Angeles area shows and interviews. In "A History Lesson Part 1, Travis presents live footage filmed in the spring of 1984 featuring the Meat Puppets, Minutemen, Twisted Roots and Redd Kross interspersed with interviews of members from each group which examines and puts a perspective on the early years of "psychedelic" punk rock in Los Angeles and Phoenix, AZ. Each song by each group is presented from start to finish.

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpSokXu49FQ

Travis captured punk bands on video in L.A. for 14 years until 1997 when he decided to put down his camera. In 2000 he became a teacher with stints at John Adams Middle School teaching World and U.S. History and Santee Education Complex, a High School in South Central, L.A. teaching History and Economics. After spending nearly a decade as a teacher, Travis re-united with his passion for video and began digitizing and restoring his old footage. "A History Lesson Part One" is the first fruit harvested from his archive.

Travis also plays cello in the long-time Los Angeles punk / psychedelic / jazz band Carnage Asada.

Remembering Peter Steele today

A toast for our friend today, and an appropriately giant thank you to "The Big Fella" for all the amazing music, the laughs, and for just for being Peter. One of a kind. You are, and will always be missed, worldwide.

I decided to go into storage and find all the photos I had of Peter so I could share them with everyone today. None of them have ever been seen before. A lot of them are from the Carnivore meet & greet ("Greet the Meat"), others just from random nights at the bar. They capture some of the spirit of fun we always had when Peter was around, and hopefully they'll bring a smile to your face today like they did for me. - J.D.

The newly uploaded photos can be viewed in the Peter Steele album here.

A most Negative Thursday ...

A reply to all the inquiries about the bar on Thursday:
Well, it's hard to believe it's been 1 year since Peter's passing. We will be marking this somber occasion at the bar - Just an informal gathering of like minded folks to enjoy Peter's music and celebrate his life. A permanent display will also be unveiled at the bar, it was originally a gift from Peter ( No, it's not his underwear, lol, at least not yet ). We hope to share some never before seen pix of Peter this week too. Here's an excellent 2 part piece (part 2 should be up by the time this is posted) by our friends at METAL SUCKS about Peter one year after his passing : METALSUCKS EXCLUSIVE: ONE YEAR LATER...

Join us Saturday the 26th for the official release/listening party for "SIN-ATRA", the All Star Heavy Metal/Hard Rock tribute to Frank Sinatra. View the official press release for the "SIN-ATRA" disc below:

A New Twist On The Music Of Frank Sinatra

Eagle Rock Presents

SIN-ATRA

~CD Released March 29, 2011~

New York, NY (February 10, 2011)--What would timeless songs like “New York, New York,” “Lady Is A Tramp,” and “Fly Me To The Moon,” sound like cranked out of Marshall stacks, crooned by members of Cheap Trick, Twisted Sister, Deep Purple, Anthrax, Mr. Big, or Queensr˙che? This can now be experienced on SIN-Atra, a brand new album to be released by Eagle Rock Entertainment on March 29, 2011. [MSRP $13.98]

This all-star project, created from the team that brought you the merry, molten melodies of We Wish You A Metal Xmas, reinvents the classic songs that the great Frank Sinatra performed and, in turn, made famous. These twelve cherished tunes, written by some of the greatest songwriters of all time, are given a radical hard rock/heavy metal treatment, resulting in electrically charged versions of the classics.

Some of the most potent and recognizable voices of rock rework such legendary gems as “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Strangers In The Night,” and “That’s Life,” including Dee Snider, Robin Zander, Glenn Hughes, Joey Belladonna, Geoff Tate, , Tim “Ripper” Owens, Eric Martin, and dUg Pinnick. Producers Bob Kulick, of KISS and Meat Loaf fame, and Brett Chassen, recreated these songs on guitar and drums, respectively, rounded out by Billy Sheehan (bass) and Doug Katsaros (keyboards, orchestration). Also making an appearance as lead guitarist on “That’s Life” is renowned rock guitarist Richie Kotzen.

These familiar favorites are beloved the world over, but they’ve never been heard like this before! “A fantastic CD,” says executive producer Wendy Dio, “keeping the era alive with today's musicians.”

12th Anniversary Bash- Saturday, Jaunuary 22nd

Join us this Saturday as we celebrate the bar's 12th year of headbangin' decadence. 2010, more than previous years, brought a lot of highs and lows for the bar and the metal realm itself. The lows, of course, being the passing our friend Peter Steele, the incomparable Ronnie James Dio, and Paul Gray. Unfortunately, as the genre ages, we'lll be seeing more this, but that's life. A scroll through the news page here brings home some of the highlights of 2010 at bar - The Super Bowl party with Kerry Fuckin' King, Hellyeah photo shoot/watching Vinnie Paul air drum along to "13 Steps" on the jukebox, parties with Exodus, Watain and 1349, Dio & Dime tribute/fundraisers for charity, 2 release parties for Black Sabbath, and the list goes on and on. The best of all though, is always meeting fellow fans from all over the world and sharing our events and rockin' good times. That's always #1. We thank you for your support all these years \m/
