THE 2011 NEWS ARCHIVES
The winner of the 2011 Dean Dimebag guitar raffle was Jason Orlic, from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. This year we raised $510 for the VH1 Save The Music Foundation, and bumped our total of money raised for metal related charities to $9000 (since 2005). Not bad for a hole in the wall bar. Much thanks go out to everyone who participated, John C., and John P. & Curse from Dean Guitars. You can contribute directly to the STMF here: http://www.vh1savethemusic.com/
We are 365 days a year, and this of course means that we are OPEN Christmas Day. Happy and safe holidays everyone - Your friends at DUFF'S
Sad news today - David Gold from Woods Of Ypres passed away yesterday in a car accident. He was a very talented, super cool, down to earth dude. Big loss. A major Type O fan too, a band that clearly influenced WOP. Any TON fans would do themselves a favor and go check out some Woods music. Our condolences go out to his band mates, family, and the metal community at large at this time.
Woods Of Ypres, July 2011

Join us this Saturday for the official DVD/Blu-ray release party for Ozzy documentary "God Bless Ozzy Ozzbourne". The party starts at 9 PM and we will have a couple dozen copies of it, along with other Ozzy goodies, to give away. As always, no cover charge, 21 and over with ID.
From EAGLE ROCK ENTERTAINMENT:
Ozzy Osbourne is one of the most iconic figures in rock and one of the founding fathers of heavy metal, however to many his “Madman” persona has overshadowed his considerable musical achievements. “God Bless Ozzy Osbourne” tells for the first time the story of his career from the founding of Black Sabbath through to solo stardom and his wider fame beyond. These were the wild days of his prodigious drug and alcohol intake, of biting the head from a dove at a record company meeting and biting into a bat on stage but also of the tragic death of Randy Rhoads and the reality TV show The Osbournes. The film follows Ozzy’s torturous and emotionally fraught journey from excess to sobriety, which Ozzy regards as his greatest accomplishment. Featuring never before seen footage, new interviews with Ozzy himself, his family, his bandmates, and those who both inspired him and were inspired by him, this is the first film to take viewers inside the mind and psyche of this legendary figure.
Our friends at METALSUCKS.NET have put together a KILLER two night bill this weekend at The Gramercy Theatre, in what hopefully be will become an annual event. DUFF'S will hosting the official after show party (no cover, 21+ with ID) for the first night, Friday. Hailz to the readers of The Village Voice, who voted DUFF'S the best Metal Bar in New York City, 2011. We've garnered almost 25 "Best of NYC" acknowledgements since we opened in 1999 (almost a million years ago!), and each one has been equally appreciated. Much thanks to all the fellow "lifers" who have made a home with us, wherever our location may have been over the years.
MTV2 has posted a interview with our friends Jose Mangin and Richard Christy discussing the new Charred Walls Of The Damned disc "Cold Winds On Timeless Days". In the bit, the gents were kind enough to give props to the bar, while sporting some very sharp attire .
The clip can be viewed here http://www.mtv.com/videos/misc/701144/richard-christy-talks-charred-walls-of-the-damned.jhtml#id=1672485

Congratulations to our friends SLAYER today, the 25th Anniversary of the release of "REIGN IN BLOOD", one of the greatest and most influential Metal albums of all-time.
Machine Head was in town last night for a listening party for their latest kick ass offering "Unto The Locust". After getting caught in a clusterfuck of traffic, the band made it's way over to the bar afterwards for a jam session with our friends DIMEBAG NYC. After probably too many shots, said jam session didn't work out too well, lol, but hey, that's rock n' roll. Still, a great a night for the fans who got to throw back some drinks and hang with one of their favorite bands.
Due to Mother Nature, aka, hurricane Irene, our 5th Annual Wingfest will be postponed this weekend, with a rescheduled date likely for next Saturday. We'll let you know here as soon as we have the new date locked in - Thanks
We received a kick-ass care package today at the bar from the very generous folks at the BLS camp. Righteous. BRAVADO handles all of BLS's merch here in the USA and abroad - You can check out all their cool swag here: Black Label Society - Official Merchandise. Look for BLS USA dates this fall (along with Thin Lizzy), supporting Judas Priest on their EPITAPH tour.
Eagle Rock Entertainment has set a July 26 release date for "Double Live - Northstage Theatre 1982 / New York Steel Benefit show 2001", a two-disc DVD set which couples TWISTED SISTER live shows from the start of the band's recording career in 1982 and the beginning of its reunion career in 2001. The show from the North Stage Theater in Long Island in 1982 was the same year as the release of TWISTED SISTER's debut album, "Under The Blade". It features many of the songs from that record along with some brilliant cover versions and is a stunning snapshot of the band in its early days.
Following the terrible events of September 11, 2001, TWISTED SISTER's classic lineup reunited to headline the New York Steel benefit show at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City on November 28 that year. The concert was a fundraiser for the families of New York police officers and firefighters who had lost their lives in the attack on the World Trade Center. The reaction to TWISTED SISTER's set was overwhelming and led directly to the ongoing existence of the band today.

It has been said that Los Angeles and San Francisco were the last major metropolitan cities in which punk music scenes developed and once it hit California, punk changed shapes numerous times, spread to every corner of the United States and became a permanent fixture in popular culture.
In 1984, a teenage Dave Travis decided to capture punk rock in Los Angeles on video tape, a fascination and hobby that he would continue until 1997, logging in hundreds of hours of Los Angeles area shows and interviews. In "A History Lesson Part 1, Travis presents live footage filmed in the spring of 1984 featuring the Meat Puppets, Minutemen, Twisted Roots and Redd Kross interspersed with interviews of members from each group which examines and puts a perspective on the early years of "psychedelic" punk rock in Los Angeles and Phoenix, AZ. Each song by each group is presented from start to finish.
Travis captured punk bands on video in L.A. for 14 years until 1997 when he decided to put down his camera. In 2000 he became a teacher with stints at John Adams Middle School teaching World and U.S. History and Santee Education Complex, a High School in South Central, L.A. teaching History and Economics. After spending nearly a decade as a teacher, Travis re-united with his passion for video and began digitizing and restoring his old footage. "A History Lesson Part One" is the first fruit harvested from his archive.
Travis also plays cello in the long-time Los Angeles punk / psychedelic / jazz band Carnage Asada.

The current issue of Cycle Source (now on stands) features a cover story and spread of a wicked ride built by our friend Iliya Hamovic, plus an interview with our rockin' buds KILLCODE. Tom and the lads were kind enough to give a shout out to Duff's in the interview, and we're very appreciative for the kind words.

GOTHAMIST this week gave the bar's renowned jukebox props in their article " NYC's Best Old School Jukeboxes". Almost hard to believe that a CD jukebox is now considered old school, isn't it? The piece can be viewed HERE.

A big "Thank You" to everyone who came out last night to the bar to honor Peter. Just like Halloween, it was a very cool, respectful gathering. Biggest thanks saved for Josh Silver, for coming out a difficult night, sharing with the fans, and helping make it a very special night. That's giving back to the fans, and that's fuckin' awesome - Thanks Josh \m/
A toast for our friend today, and an appropriately giant thank you to "The Big Fella" for all the amazing music, the laughs, and for just for being Peter. One of a kind. You are, and will always be missed, worldwide.
I decided to go into storage and find all the photos I had of Peter so I could share them with everyone today. None of them have ever been seen before. A lot of them are from the Carnivore meet & greet ("Greet the Meat"), others just from random nights at the bar. They capture some of the spirit of fun we always had when Peter was around, and hopefully they'll bring a smile to your face today like they did for me. - J.D.
The newly uploaded photos can be viewed in the Peter Steele album here.
A reply to all the inquiries about the bar on Thursday:
Well, it's hard to believe it's been 1 year since Peter's passing. We will be marking this somber occasion at the bar - Just an informal gathering of like minded folks to enjoy Peter's music and celebrate his life. A permanent display will also be unveiled at the bar, it was originally a gift from Peter ( No, it's not his underwear, lol, at least not yet ). We hope to share some never before seen pix of Peter this week too. Here's an excellent 2 part piece (part 2 should be up by the time this is posted) by our friends at METAL SUCKS about Peter one year after his passing : METALSUCKS EXCLUSIVE: ONE YEAR LATER...
Join us this Saturday as we host listening parties for TWO great new albums: from one from Duff McKagan's LOADED - "THE TAKING", and "IN PARADISUM" the debut disc from the power metal super group SYMFONIA. Lots of promo goodies will be given away all night, and as usual, there is no cover charge, and this is an 21 and over event, I.D. required.

Join us Saturday the 26th for the official release/listening party for "SIN-ATRA", the All Star Heavy Metal/Hard Rock tribute to Frank Sinatra. View the official press release for the "SIN-ATRA" disc below:
A New Twist On The Music Of Frank Sinatra
Eagle Rock Presents
~CD Released March 29, 2011~
New York, NY (February 10, 2011)--What would timeless songs like “New York, New York,” “Lady Is A Tramp,” and “Fly Me To The Moon,” sound like cranked out of Marshall stacks, crooned by members of Cheap Trick, Twisted Sister, Deep Purple, Anthrax, Mr. Big, or Queensr˙che? This can now be experienced on SIN-Atra, a brand new album to be released by Eagle Rock Entertainment on March 29, 2011. [MSRP $13.98]
This all-star project, created from the team that brought you the merry, molten melodies of We Wish You A Metal Xmas, reinvents the classic songs that the great Frank Sinatra performed and, in turn, made famous. These twelve cherished tunes, written by some of the greatest songwriters of all time, are given a radical hard rock/heavy metal treatment, resulting in electrically charged versions of the classics.
Some of the most potent and recognizable voices of rock rework such legendary gems as “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Strangers In The Night,” and “That’s Life,” including Dee Snider, Robin Zander, Glenn Hughes, Joey Belladonna, Geoff Tate, , Tim “Ripper” Owens, Eric Martin, and dUg Pinnick. Producers Bob Kulick, of KISS and Meat Loaf fame, and Brett Chassen, recreated these songs on guitar and drums, respectively, rounded out by Billy Sheehan (bass) and Doug Katsaros (keyboards, orchestration). Also making an appearance as lead guitarist on “That’s Life” is renowned rock guitarist Richie Kotzen.
These familiar favorites are beloved the world over, but they’ve never been heard like this before! “A fantastic CD,” says executive producer Wendy Dio, “keeping the era alive with today's musicians.”

This just in - The folks at NYC.com have compiled a list of the top 20 jukeboxes in New York City, with DUFF'S crackin' the top ten at # 8. For a Metal jukebox, that's pretty goddamn cool, and definitely a victory of sorts for the Metal scene. We'll take it.
Barfinder.com has informed us that DUFF'S has been named in their list of the top 100 bars in the country (to be exact, #37 out of 60,000 listed). As we are fond of saying, a bar is only as good as the people who drink there - so, many thanks to our patrons. And we'll drink to that \m/

Join us this Saturday as we celebrate the bar's 12th year of headbangin' decadence. 2010, more than previous years, brought a lot of highs and lows for the bar and the metal realm itself. The lows, of course, being the passing our friend Peter Steele, the incomparable Ronnie James Dio, and Paul Gray. Unfortunately, as the genre ages, we'lll be seeing more this, but that's life. A scroll through the news page here brings home some of the highlights of 2010 at bar - The Super Bowl party with Kerry Fuckin' King, Hellyeah photo shoot/watching Vinnie Paul air drum along to "13 Steps" on the jukebox, parties with Exodus, Watain and 1349, Dio & Dime tribute/fundraisers for charity, 2 release parties for Black Sabbath, and the list goes on and on. The best of all though, is always meeting fellow fans from all over the world and sharing our events and rockin' good times. That's always #1. We thank you for your support all these years \m/
A casting call will be held at the bar later this month, more details TBA:

Today, January fourth, sadly marks what would have been Peter's 49th birthday. We held an informal get together at the bar back on Halloween, as a celebration of Peter and his favorite holiday. The event was taped, and today seems like an appropriate day to revisit that evening. R.I.P. "Green Man", you are missed ...
C'mon out this Thursday (6 PM to 10:30 PM) to the bar as we hold our second annual blood drive for The New York Blood Center. Last year we donated 37 pints, just barely missing the 40 pint maximum. Free refreshments will be served by The Blood Center, and DUFF'S has stepped up to give everyone who gives blood this year a free event t-shirt (see below). Join us as we kick off the New Year with this pain- free, life saving event !!
